I originally started designing and manufacturing jewelry which I sold at art fairs and markets. Life re-routed my priorities to raising a family and had to set aside the creative me for a while. I always had an interest in learning ceramics and sculpting, and had an opportunity to acquire this new skill a few years ago, I have been hooked ever since!
My creations are organic in design and primarily inspired by nature and the Arts and Crafts movement. Each piece is handmade, and one-of-a-kind, with gestures that show movement, flow and immediacy. I incorporate various techniques and materials to my work. Ena E. Shipman CeramicsI make each piece by hand, using a smooth white porcelain or many grades of stoneware, forming them from slab or on the pottery wheel. Once dry, the pieces are bisque fired to make them strong enough to handle, then they receive several hand painted coats of glaze or stain, and are then fired a second time in my electric kiln to cone 6.(mid fire)
